Electrical grid modernization requires unprecedented mechanical reliability and electrical insulation safety. Compared to conventional porcelain or composite designs, toughened glass disc insulators offer a major operational advantage: spontaneous shatter visibility. When a dielectric puncture or extreme mechanical failure occurs, the toughened glass shell shatters predictably into tiny fragments, while the internal steel pin remains locked under high mechanical loads. This "zero-value" state is instantly visible to maintenance crews during aerial drone inspections, completely eliminating the need for expensive diagnostic tests.
Furthermore, toughened glass has an exceptionally low aging rate. Unlike composite polymers that degrade due to UV exposure and corona discharge, glass maintains its dielectric properties for over 50 years, ensuring high return-on-investment (ROI) for global utilities operating in harsh environments.
China is the global leader in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage (UHV) power grid deployments. This domestic demand has driven the evolution of a highly optimized supplier ecosystem. Chinese manufacturers, centered around Luxi Industrial County, benefit from deep supply chains, advanced automated raw material mixing systems, and high-precision gas furnaces. At Jiangxi QOCI Electric Co. Ltd, we integrate total oxygen kiln technology and high-tonnage forming presses to process raw silicate mixes into robust toughened glass with zero internal air bubbles.
This localized supply chain cluster allows us to maintain stable production costs, fast delivery times, and rigorous quality testing. We perform 100% mechanical routine testing and high-voltage steep-front impulse voltage tests on every batch to satisfy global bidding specifications under IEC and ANSI standards.
Different environmental conditions demand customized insulation shapes. Selecting the correct outer glass profile prevents line flashovers and reduces corona-related losses.
Features a leakage distance exceeding the standard requirements indicated in IEC 60305. The under-ribs are designed with shallow and well-spaced spacing, allowing natural cleaning by wind and rain. Ideally suited for clean atmospheric conditions with minimal particulate accumulation.
Characterized by deep, long, and widely-spaced under-ribs that prevent electrical bridging between adjacent ribs under high-humidity conditions. With a leakage distance/spacing ratio around 3.2, it is highly effective in coastal areas subject to salt fog and industrial air pollution.
Designed specifically without under-ribs to minimize sand and dust accumulation. This flat-bottom design uses local winds to self-clean the lower glass surface, preventing ice-bridging and dust build-up. Perfect for high-wind desert regions with low seasonal rainfall.
This layout utilizes two distinct external ribs that maximize the creepage distance while keeping the under-surface flat and open. The lack of interior crevices prevents localized chemical dust build-up, facilitating quick manual washdowns in heavily polluted industrial areas.
Features three layers of independent umbrella discs offset vertically along the insulating body. This complex profile provides the maximum available creepage distance within a compact structural height. Recommended for extra-high voltage and UHV lines crossing mountain ranges.
Designed with specific steel fittings to connect the transmission tower's ground line directly. This configuration safely channels high-energy lightning strikes and sudden surge currents directly to the earth network, protecting delicate equipment on the primary high-voltage line.
Combines the mechanical robustness of toughened glass with the excellent water-shedding properties of composite silicone. The Room Temperature Vulcanization (RTV) coating contains mineral fillers that suppress leakage currents and electrical arcs, reducing cleaning maintenance.

Get answers to critical technical questions regarding the design, testing, and operation of toughened glass insulators on high-voltage transmission lines.
Unlike porcelain insulators which can develop micro-cracks that hide deep inside the head area and require hand-held testers to identify, toughened glass behaves in a binary way. If the glass body suffers severe damage or a dielectric breakdown, it completely shatters into safe, small fragments. The inner core cap and steel pin assembly remain completely intact, keeping the line mechanically secure. Maintenance crews can easily locate the shattered units visually or via drone passes, reducing line diagnostic costs to practically zero.
IEC 60305 covers the dimensions, mechanical load capabilities (such as 70kN, 120kN, 160kN, 210kN, up to 550kN), and profiles of cap and pin insulators, specifying standard tongue-and-clevis or ball-and-socket couplings. ANSI standards (like C29.2) define requirements for similar components but use different dimensions for ball-and-socket configurations and class designations. As a global exporter, Jiangxi QOCI designs and tests configurations to satisfy both specifications, depending on the requirements of your regional grid authority.
RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanization) silicone-coated glass insulators are recommended for regions subject to heavy industrial pollution, salt fog, or desert sand. The RTV silicone layer provides hydrophobic surface properties, preventing the formation of continuous water films. This suppresses leakage currents and reduces the risks of pollution flashover, eliminating the need for periodic manual washing cycles in coastal or chemical plant zones.
At our plant, we closely monitor two stages to ensure consistent glass quality. First, raw batch materials are melted in our total oxygen gas furnace at over 1500°C to eliminate air bubbles. Second, during the tempering stage, we direct cold air streams onto the hot glass surface. This cooling process creates a balanced state of high compressive stress on the outer glass layers and tensile stress on the inside. This balance gives toughened glass its high mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance.
Desert lines face challenges from dry sand accumulation. Standard profiles with deep under-ribs tend to catch blown sand, creating paths for leakage current. Aerodynamic profiles feature flat undersides without deep ribs, allowing strong desert winds to clean the surface. This design prevents dry dust buildup and minimizes leakage current when light morning dew occurs.
